How fees work
Nothing starts until the scope of the work and the fee for it are agreed in writing. The figure quoted is the figure charged, unless the work changes and you agree to the change first.
- Single will
- A fixed fee, agreed in writing once we know what the will has to do. Quote on review.
- Mirror wills for a couple
- A fixed fee covering both wills, agreed in writing before drafting begins. Quote on review.
- Lasting power of attorney
- A fixed fee per document. The Office of the Public Guardian registration fee is separate and paid to them, not to us. Quote on review.
- Grant of probate only
- A fixed fee for obtaining the grant, where you provide the estate figures and deal with the administration yourself. Quote on review.
- Full estate administration
- Quoted on the facts of the estate. What drives it: the number of assets, whether property has to be sold, whether inheritance tax is payable, and whether anyone disputes anything. Quote on review.
- Trusts
- Quoted once we know what the trust has to achieve and who the beneficiaries are. Quote on review.
Disbursements
Disbursements are costs paid to other people, not to us. We pass them on at cost, without any mark-up, and they are payable whoever does the work.
- The probate application fee, and the cost of any additional copies of the grant, payable to the Probate Registry whoever does the work.
- Office of the Public Guardian registration fees, payable when a lasting power of attorney is registered.
- Statutory notices, placed to protect an executor against claims that come to light later.
- Bankruptcy searches, carried out against beneficiaries before an estate is distributed.
What makes an estate cost more
- How many assets the estate holds, and where they are.
- Whether a property has to be sold or transferred.
- Whether inheritance tax is payable and a return has to be prepared.
- Whether anyone disputes the will, the estate, or an appointment made under it.
- Whether the paperwork is straightforward or has to be reconstructed first.
